Thinking about it now, I am pretty sure I have bought four licenses to Windows XP over the years, even though I never had it running on more than one computer. (Thank you for that, Microsoft.) Of course I didn't feel good about being coerced into repurchasing something I already owned, but what could I do? There were programs I relied on that had no Linux counterpart or equivalent.
Luckily, the number of such programs has been steadily decreasing over the years. (Thank you unsarcastically, OpenSource movement.) Flash forward to present day and the last of the tethers has finally been cut.
